Abekawamochi is famous sweet in the Shizuoka prefecture. Two different kinds of mochi are in a typical set. One is kinako (roasted soybean powder) mochi and sugar. And the other is mochi and sweet red beans. Many years ago sugar was a precious food, so Abekawa mochi was offered to the king of the samurai.
It is not that rare of a sweet right now, and there are many kinds of mochi-like Abekawa. The taste is almost the same but packaged in a little bit different shape with slightly different ingredients and appearance.

We have very popular food souvenirs called “Akafuku Mochi “ in the prefecture Mie. The ingredients are almost the same as those in black sweet bean abekawa mochi, but the size and package are different. You can see many kinds of beautiful packages of sweets in Japan. The beautiful packaging is a special characteristic of our sweets. It may be excessive, but it is devised to keep mochi soft for a long time because Japanese souvenirs are sold in so many places for tourists.
There is mochi in my prefecture too! You can find mochi on the old street called “kaidou.” What kinds do we have? Go to this link to see!
